La Spezia - Italy
La Spezia in the Liguria Region of north-west Italy is a seaside resort at the eastern end of the Riviera and an industrial town producing ships, iron and steel, and petroleum. With its excellent natural harbour, the city is the main Italian naval base. The city has a fine 15th-century cathedral, which contains work in terracotta by the Florentine sculptor Andrea della Robbia. A fortified port since the Middle Ages, La Spezia was badly damaged during World War II and liberated by the Allies in 1945. From here it is possible to visit legendary Florence, Renaissance city of the Medici grand dukes. There are more than 30 cruises calling at this port.
