Laayoune is a city in the Western Sahara territory with about 200,000 people. Western Sahara, where it is the largest city, was occupied by Morocco in 1975, It is situated 30 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The town was founded in 1930 by the Spanish as an administrative centre of the phosphate industry. From 1975 a second town centre grew up on the hills over old Laayoune.
