Lorino - Russia, East

The Chukchi village of Lorino lies on the far northeast corner of Russia. Here there are Chukchi women dressed in traditional brown, beaded costumes standing in a line beating skin drums in a gesture of welcome. Take the steep sand hill to explore the town. Walk the muddy streets among leaning electric poles, dog yards, and Soviet-era apartment buildings. In the distance, a fox farm, once the town's livelihood, stretched out across the rolling Siberian hills. Nearby is Cape Krigyugun where you may see an abundance of seabird species including the northern fulmar, kittiwakes and puffin.
