Lake Malaren - Sweden

Lake Malaren lies at the end of Sodertalje canal off the Baltic Sea, southwest of Stockholm. On the island of Björkö in the lake is the world heritage medieval city of Birka, founded in the 9th century and one of the earliest urban settlements in Scandinavia. On the island of Adelso there are burial mounds. The royal palace and gardens of Drottingham on the island of Lovon are Renaissance inspired from the late 17th century - The Karl X Gustav Gallery, the painted ceilings of the State Bedchamber, the Slottsteater and the Chinese pavilion Kina slott are all worth a look. Around the lake are castles and manors from the 16th to 18th centuries including Gronsoo Castle. Nearby is the town of Sodertalje and Gripsholm Castle.
